Why Do We Need Your Help?

In October 2023 the main swimming pool at the Leisure Centre was closed following water leakage due to damaged pipework. After many months of discussions regarding the future of the swimming pool, on Tuesday 14 May 2024 Newark & Sherwood District Council (NSDC) took the decision to remove their earlier offer of funding of £5.5 million to build a new swimming pool complex. They announced they wanted to negotiate with the Trust to end the lease. On 21 May 2025 the lease was terminated between the Trust and NSDC. Active4Today and Southwell Leisure Centre Trust also signed an agreement to continue the daily operations of Southwell Leisure Centre until 31 March 2026.

The last few months have been difficult, but the Trust has been in the process of :-

  1. Obtaining further quotes for repairs to the main swimming pool with an ambition to have the pool reopened as soon as possible.

  2. Working with NSDC to negotiate the termination of the lease.

  3. Recruiting new Trustees, so that decisions about SLC can be taken by a larger and more representative group from the community.

  4. Raising money for various linked purposes.

  5. Revising the charity’s Scheme of Administration (governing documents) to ensure that it is up to date and fit for purpose, to enable the Trust to work effectively on behalf of the beneficiaries.

Southwell Leisure Centre Trust now has an incredible opportunity to create an amazing community hub for our town. Community-owned and run leisure centres offer a multitude of benefits which positively impact both individuals and the broader community. Economically, they keep revenue within the local area, supporting jobs and promoting economic growth, while often operating more cost-effectively than privately or publicly run centres. Socially, these centres foster a strong sense of community pride and engagement, providing volunteer opportunities and promoting social inclusion by offering programs for diverse groups. This is exactly what we are looking at for Southwell Leisure Centre.

The Trust wants to make progress as rapidly as possible; we can’t do that on our own. We would like the whole community to come together to help and support us to develop an amazing asset for our community. There are a couple of ways you can help

As a result of recent and future changes in the oversight of Southwell Leisure Centre, the Board of Trustees seeks expressions of interest from people who would like to be considered for appointment as a Trustee or to join a new Leisure Centre Advisory Group. There are many tasks to be completed, which the current Trustees will not be able to carry out by themselves and assistance would be gratefully received. For more details see Join as a Trustee or Advisory Group Member

Thank you for considering our request. We look forward to celebrating the re-opening of all of our facilities and witnessing the positive impact it will have on our beloved community.
