Readers will be aware from the recent joint press release by Newark and Sherwood District Council and Southwell Leisure Centre Trust that mediation on the future of the Southwell Leisure Centre on Wednesday 26 March has been successful. We are grateful to the Council representatives at the mediation for taking a constructive and amicable approach to the discussions, to ensure the best possible outcome. The legal sign-off on the mediation agreement will be in just under 1 month.

The result of the mediation is that the Trust will now have sufficient funds to repair the main swimming pool to the standards we concluded were necessary to ensure long-term functioning of the pool, improve health and safety, reduce adverse environmental impacts and ensure improvements in accessibility and amenity for people with disabilities.
The trustees have already made contact with their preferred construction company and hope in the next week or so to get a date in the diary for repair work to start. It is anticipated that repairs will take 3-4 months, so we hope that everything will be up and running again ahead of the 60th anniversary of the leisure centre later this year.
We are aware that there is a need for some equipment to be replaced and some of the building structure to be looked at and will also be able to provide a considerable sum for these things to happen.
The trustees are now engaging in discussions about future management of the leisure centre, to ensure that we can offer a responsive and forward-thinking approach to health and fitness for the people of the area.
The trustees are aware that the past 18 months have been frustrating, upsetting and costly for many people but we hope that, now the decision has been made, we will be able to count on your support and help to carry out our tasks and restore the leisure centre to a standard which everyone will be proud of.
