We want to share the latest update from Southwell Leisure Centre Trust (SLCT) and thank you once again for your continued patience, support, and belief in the Centre’s future.
Over the past few months, we’ve been working hard to stabilise Southwell Leisure Centre (SLC), plan for its long-term success, and bring forward the changes needed to turn it into a modern, inclusive community facility.
Here’s where things stand right now:
Swimming Pool: Investigations and Next Steps
The swimming pool remains one of the most valued and missed parts of the Centre — and we know just how many local families, clubs, and individuals have been affected by its closure.
In June, we began essential underground investigations around the pool to uncover the source of the structural problems. These initial checks allowed us to engage with some pool specialists who have come up with outline solutions design. However, further investigation is required to ensure that these designs are viable.
Because the repair of the pool is so critical to the Centre’s long-term future, we’ve made the strategic decision to include the pool repair as part of the remit of the new long-term operator. This means that once appointed, the new operator will take responsibility for leading the repair process — bringing in their experience, contacts and resources to deliver the most cost-effective and efficient solution.
This decision has not been taken lightly, and we are naturally disappointed not to be able to reopen the pool sooner. However, we are confident that the right operator will ensure that Southwell Leisure Centre has a sustainable, long-term future for years to come — and that the pool will be reopened as part of that wider recovery.
Hunt for a Long-Term Operator
To support this transition, we recently appointed a leisure consultant to guide us through the search for a new permanent operator for the Centre. This week, we officially began the tender process, inviting proposals from experienced operators.
We aim to appoint the new operator by November, with a handover planned for early next year. Their appointment will mark a major step forward in delivering long-term sustainability and improving the services the Centre can offer.
Financial Reality: Get Involved and Support Your Leisure Centre
While we’re making steady progress, the Centre’s financial position remains difficult. The impact of the pandemic, increased running costs, and the ongoing pool closure continue to present significant challenges.
Although the pool remains closed for now, there’s still plenty happening at Southwell Leisure Centre, from gym sessions and fitness classes to community events and room hire. It’s a great time to get involved, reconnect with your local centre, and help shape its future.
Become a Member
The best way to support us right now is by becoming a member. Every membership provides essential, regular income that helps keep the Centre running.
You can also help by spreading the word to friends, neighbours, and local groups, encouraging them to join or return.
From helping babies and toddlers with confidence and sleep; keeping happy and healthy; to maintaining flexibility and independence as we get older - SLC has a wide range of activities for everyone.
There are different membership options for juniors, students, adults, the over 60s and businesses. Membership saves you money and gives you access to book classes and activities online, as many classes are very popular this helps make sure you get a place.
As travel costs increase, using your local leisure centre is cost effective without the stress and time spent going elsewhere, with membership also saving you queuing at reception.
A class such as Active Pilates is £8.50, so, with many people going more than once a week, the membership is very attractive.
There is currently an offer of half price joining fee of £10 to cover set up and your membership card.
See www.active4today.co.uk/memberships/ for membership and further details.
